Our trip so far has been filled with creative and artistic experiences, people, and places.
The town of Todos Santos itself is overflowing with color and creativity. Walking down the streets,you can find art galleries galore, open to the public and ready for you to put your art-critic eye to use, perhaps comparing a painting’s style to that of a Monet or Picasso.
Today with my group, I perused a magnificent gallery that I stepped into because I was intrigued by a mosaic tree on its door. Inside the gallery were many landscapes, mainly of ocean views. My favorite was called “White Beach,” which depicted a scene of the ocean illuminated by the light of the moon.
As one of our afternoon activities, we had the absolute pleasure of taking an art class with local painter and sculpture Benito Ortega. He taught us how to draw a face with carefully laid-out proportions. Then, using our drawings as reference, we sculpted faces out of clay. Students let loose their creative freedom, constructing faces with different expressions and character.
If you find yourself walking down the streets of Todos Santos, be sure to notice the banners of pink, blue, green, yellow, red, and orange draped from one building to the next. You’ll also see murals painted across once-bare walls as well as artistic expression evident even in the architecture styles, with arches that can frequently be found in concrete blocks and as doorways to someone’s home.
Todos Santos is blooming with art and life, and our group has been breathing in this town’s colorful creativity on our trip so far.
