Getting to Work in Las Pacas

¡¡Buenos tardes, todos!!

As previously mentioned by Kevin, we’ve arrived in Las Pacas. It was amazing waking up to a beautiful Monday morning sunrise as the first thing we saw–in addition to all the dogs, I should say. This morning, Afton and Kevin went out on Don Santiago’s skiff to watch him and Doña Mati pull in the fishing nets they had set the previous night. After that, we had breakfast, did spiritual prep, and began our service!

Some of us helped rebuild the fence, some cleaned up glass and trash, and some worked in the huerta–sorry, the garden. While we were working the huerta, we discovered there was a diseased lemon tree. One of the local marine biologists that was helping us recommended that we plant it elsewhere, so we dug it up and replanted it in a new location. We also helped make new garden beds for some relative of a squash plant. Before I knew it, lunch was upon us. After we all ate and cleaned up, we headed over to Dona Santiago and Doña Mati’s home, where we watched presentations by local fisherman, biologists, and sustainability groups on how people in the area are working to help achieve the goal of sustainable fishing.

Finally, we said goodbye today to Afton, Lindsey, Bailey, and Kevin, and we welcomed Woody and Mak onto the trip with us.
